Young india row: NDA govt trying to bury Lalit Modi case, says Congress

Congress’s communication department, said the BJP government had been trying to bury the ‘Lalit Modi scandal’ by asserting that his deportation was not possible.

A day after BJP raised questions on one of the financial transactions made by Young India, a firm in which Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul have a majority stake, the Congress hit back, resurrecting the Lalit Modi controversy.

It released a 2013 correspondence between the then British finance minister George Osborne and then finance minister P Chidambaram which mentions the discussions between the “officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth” and the Indian High Commission in London about the deportation of Lalit Modi.

Congress said the letter proves that the Indian High Commission was in “full knowledge and was actually discussing the matter with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of UK contradicting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s argument that the MEA had no knowledge of the correspondence of Chidambaram”.
