Wife of man behind ‘selfie with daughter’ loses sarpanch poll

Deepa had fought instead of her husband Sunil Jaglan, the outgoing sarpanch of Bibipur, as the post was reserved for a woman candidate this time.

Deepa Jaglan, wife of the man behind the “selfie with daughter” campaign, lost the contest for the post of sarpanch in Bibipur village on Sunday.

Deepa had fought instead of her husband Sunil Jaglan, the outgoing sarpanch of Bibipur, as the post was reserved for a woman candidate this time.

After the result came in on Sunday, Sunil said that the entire administration had worked against him and bogus voting had taken place.

Sunil shot to fame after a women-driven khap panchayat was held here and a resolution was adopted demanding capital punishment for female foeticide. Thereafter a number of initiatives were taken in the village for women empowerment.

The name of the village was also changed to Bibipur, meaning a women’s world.

Last year, Sunil held a “selfie with daughter” contest, in which parents were asked to send selfies with their daughters and the best pictures were awarded. The contest went viral and selfies were received from various states.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Sunil and the contest in his ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme and sought selfies from across the country.

However, despite support for his initiatives from various quarters, the going was not smooth for Sunil in the village. During the campaigning, Sunil said that a section of villagers who had been asked to stop encroaching on common village land were against him. A complaint was moved against Jaglan to the Deputy Commissioner and he faced suspension during his tenure.
However, Sunil got a stay against the order from the High Court.
