West Bengal police arrest 9 Bangladesh citizens for entering India illegally

Those arrested have been identified as Mukul Hossain, Safikul Sardar, Raihan Islam, Miznur Islam, Abdul Gani, Jamshed Gaaji, Ziarul Islam, Hasal Ali and Fatima Bibi.

West Bengal Police Wednesday arrested nine Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, for illegally crossing over to India. All accused are in their 20s and were arrested following a raid near Ghojadanga border area of Basirhat in North-24 Parganas. They were produced in the Basirhat court on Thursday and have been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.

“They were illegally trespassing and we have booked them under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act,1946. During preliminary questions, they revealed that they had planned to go to south India in search for jobs. Further investigation is on,” Bhaskar Mukherjee , SP North-24 Parganas told The Indian Express.

Those arrested have been identified as Mukul Hossain, Safikul Sardar, Raihan Islam, Miznur Islam, Abdul Gani, Jamshed Gaaji, Ziarul Islam, Hasal Ali and Fatima Bibi.

“Most of them are residents of Satkhira in Bangladesh. They could not produce any legal documents or valid ID proof and none of them had passports. We are probing how they crossed the border,” said a local police officer who is part of the team investigating the case.

North 24 Parganas shares nearly 241 km international border with Bangladesh. As per sources, in July this year, Basirhat police alone arrested 45 Bangladeshi nationals who had illegally crossed over. “Basirhat police station covers nearly 22 km of the international border, which includes 13 km of land and 9 km riverine border,” a senior official said.
