West Bengal officials discuss possible currency shortfall

Sources said Banerjee requested RBI to ensure that the supply of cash of all denominations to pay salaries and pension.

Officers of the state secretariat, comprising top administrative and RBI officials, met at Nabanna Wednesday to discuss possible shortfall of currency after payment of salary to employees by the end of the month.

Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee chaired a review meeting with RBI officials, officials of other banks and union agriculture secretary Raghvendra Singh. Sources said Banerjee requested RBI to ensure that the supply of cash of all denominations to pay salaries and pension.

However a senior government official reportedly said they were not in a position to guarantee it.

Sources said Banerjee also brought up inconvenience of farmers owing to unavailability of cash, and requested officials to streamline banking and ATM services as salaries would have to be paid on November 30 and December 1.
