Samajwadi Party’s floundering campaign for coming assembly elections is likely to gain some momentum with party president Mulayam Singh Yadav set to address a “grand rally” in Ghazipur on November 23 on the birth anniversary of socialist leader Raj Narain. While Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has completed one-day tour of his Samajwadi Vikas Rath Yatra’s first phase, the rally will be first by Mulayam in the run-up to Assembly polls after his previously scheduled public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency Azamgarh on October 6 was cancelled amid a power tussle among the members of his family.

Mulayam’s rally will also be held about two weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public meeting in Ghazipur on November 14.

“The SP president will address a massive rally at the RTI ground in Ghazipur on November 23. Earlier, the rally was scheduled for November 11, but it could not be organised because of his tight schedule,” said Misbahuddin, the general secretary of the Quami Ekta Dal (QED), which has since merged with the SP.

SP district president Ramdhari Yadav too confirmed the date and the venue.

Claiming that Mulayam’s rally will be “bigger” than PM’s rally at the same venue, Misbahuddin said scores of workers from various districts of Purvanchal — Ghazipur, Mau, Azamgarh, Ballia, Varanasi, Sonebhadra, Bhadohi, Chandauli and Jaunpur — will attend it.

SP state president Shivpal Yadav held a meeting of party functionaries from these districts Friday to discuss the preparations for the rally.
The SP had won six of the seven Assembly seats in Ghazipur district in 2012. One remaining seat was won by Quami Ekta Dal.
