At least three Maoists were killed in an encounter with commandos of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police in a forest near Marripakala in Koyyuru Mandal, Visakhapatnam on Wednesday evening.

Officials said that a routine patrol party of APSP detected the movement of Maoists suspected to be members of Galikonda Area Committee in the forest and asked them to surrender. An exchange of fire ensued in which three Maoists, including two women, were killed and several others fled the spot.

An AK-47 was recovered from one of the slain Maoists, believed to be dalam commander Gopal alias Azad. Gopal carried a reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head. The three are yet to be officially identified.
A massive search and combing operation has been launched in the area to nab the others. Officials said that security had been tightened after Maoists had called for a bandh in the areas bordering East Godavari, Khammam and Visakhapatnam on Wednesday against police operations, and that during a routine patrol the APSP personnel came across the Maoists camping in the forest. On February 21, two Maoists were killed in an encounter with APSP in the same area.
