Surat police have started making a dossier of Patidar youths who were allegedly involved in disrupting the public felicitation of BJP national president Amit Shah and the party’s Patidar MLAs in Abrahma area of the city last month.
On September 8, an event organised by Patidar Abhivadan Samiti (PAS) — set up by businessmen Mahesh Sawani and Mukesh Patel to felicitate Shah and other Patidar BJP leaders in Surat — was disrupted following slogan-shouting by Hardik Patel’s supporters who also broke chairs at the venue.
More than 135 Patidars had been detained by Surat rural police and sent to Galudi where they were kept for one night.
The next day, following intervention by Sawani, who wrote to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, all cases against the Patidar youths were withdrawn.
Several detained Patidar youths were from Amroli area of the city. For the past few days, Amroli police have been calling up the Patidar youths residing in the area to collect information about them.
So far, 10 people have been contacted by police officials in this regard.
A copy of the questionnaire accessed by The Indian Express had queries about their “special habits” and “weaknesses”, apart from nationality, community and place of birth.
Surat co-convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samithi Alpesh Katheriya said: “We don’t know why police are doing this thing… We contacted police, and they told us that it is a routine procedure.”
Inspector H S Purani said, “It is the general procedure… we also make dossiers of political parties, MLAs, MPs, student leaders, union leaders and others. So far, we have filled 10 dossier forms and still the process is going on. We have got orders for this from higher authorities.”
