Seven wards of Kanakpur-Kansad nagarpalika in Surat district will go to polls on Sunday. In closely fought 2011 elections, BJP had won 11 seats and the Congress 10 in this nagarpalika. While the BJP is trying to cash in on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation move, Congress hopes to expose BJP’s failure to improve basic infrastructures like road, sanitation.

Incidentally, in ward no 1, Congress has pitted Baguben Saburbhai Bharwad against her niece Vasantiben Hajabhai Bharwad of BJP. Of the seven wards going to polls, only one ward is in Kansad while the remaining six wards are in Kanakpur. Each ward has four candidates — two men and two women — each. The total number of voters in all seven wards are 18,000. The six wards have a majority of migrant workers from Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan who are employed in textile and embroidery units in Sachin GIDC, Surat.

Nirav Naik, Congress leader from Kansad village, said, “The BJP has failed to provide basic infrastructures like roads, sanitation and power to people. We have assured voters that if Congress gets full majority in the nagarpalika polls, we will provide all basic amenities like water, road, power, to the people.” ENS
