FED UP with the civic body for failing to clear garbage in ‘Smart City’ Ludhiana, residents have started a unique protest by launching a ‘Selfie With Garbage’ contest Monday.

A banner, announcing the contest, has been put up on a wall near Silver Arc Mall on Ferozepur Road where a pile of garbage, lying there even before Diwali, has not been removed by Ludhiana Municipal Corporation despite multiple complaints by the residents.

Watch what else is making news:

The banner announces Rs 2,100 prize money for the best selfie with the garbage entry. It is also asking residents to submit entries on Facebook by tagging the location. The message on the banner also ‘appreciates’ the civic body for ‘ignoring’ Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Selfie Kheecho, Upload Karo, Rs 2,100 ka Inaam Paao – Desh Badal Raha Hai Aage Badh Raha Hai,” says the message on the banner installed behind a heap of garbage.

The banner also “thanks” municipal commissioner, mayor, councillor of ward 56, Ludhiana West MLA, district BJP president and district president of Shiromani Akali Dal for the situation.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Prabhakar, a resident who came up with the idea, said, “A few days before Diwali, we filed an online complaint
on the MC website to get garbage cleared from the area. No one responded. Then we sent a written complaint but the garbage lies as it is till today.
The district administration started ‘Selfie With Toilet’ to promote cleanliness. So, we decided to have ‘Selfie with Garbage’ contest to make our voice heard. We have already received 60 entries for the banner.”

“If this is the situation on Ferozepur Road, the poshest area of Smart City Ludhiana, then we can imagine the pathetic situation in interiors and industrial area. We can’t understand what this Smart City stands for if basic cleanliness cannot be maintained,” rued Roshan Dhawan, another resident.

Municipal Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said he would look into the complaint and garbage will be cleared soon. “I will check why no action was taken on this complaint,” he added.
