Kashmiri separatists Wednesday announced extended relaxation in their protest calendar, pausing shutdowns for two full days over the weekend for the first time in over four months.
The relaxation after 129 days of shutdowns followed a meeting separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik held with traders and transporters earlier this month. Earlier, relaxations had sporadically lasted for few hours.

The three asked people to open businesses but only use public transport over the weekend. “People are requested to exclusively use public transport on these days for the support of transport(er) community,” the separatists said in their latest protest calendar. “As a social and community responsibility, encourage your family and friends as well for the same. All vehicles should hoist black flags as a mark of protest.’’ The separatists have asked people to allow unhindered movement of public and private transport during nights on all days.
Complete shutdowns would be observed on Friday, Monday and Tuesday while they would be relaxed in afternoon on the rest of the days.
