Robbers loot 10 kg gold from Manapuram Finance in Jalandhar

In a daylight robbery, six persons barged into Kerala-based gold financing company Manappuram Finance Limited branch in Jalandhar on Monday afternoon, and made away with 10 kg of gold and cash.

Assistant manager Naresh said that, around 12.15 pm, two youths came to enquire about finance terms and conditions and left. “Soon after they came in with four of their accomplices and took us hostage,” he said. “They brandished a gun and knives.”

He said that except for one of the youth who was among the two who came in earlier, all others had their faces covered. At the time of the heist, along with Naresh were Ankit, an employee, and Ram Lal, a customer. The robbers snatched their mobile phones and pushed them inside a washroom, he said.

The robbers then took the keys of a safe and looted the gold and Rs 36,000 in cash, said police sources. A little later, the three hostages came out of the washroom and called in the police.

Eyewitnesses reported that the police were late, while it was the media which reached the spot first. Police have obtained CCTV footage, which was recorded in servers in Kerala. Police are also investigating role of the employees in the robbery.

In a statement issued Wednesday, The management of Manappuram Finance Ltd said the interest of their customers and security of their gold jewellery is their ‘first priority’.

“We confirm that the gold stolen from the branch is fully insured. We have committed our full cooperation with the police in the investigations. We have shared all necessary information and data, and we are confident that the looted property will be recovered soon.”
