A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped and strangled to death by a 32-year-old man in his house under Namkom police station area of the city on Tuesday. The residents caught hold of the accused and thrashed him before handing him over to the police.
According to the police, the incident occurred in a locality in Namkom around 3.30 p.m. The residents, looking for the four-year-old girl who had gone missing for some time, caught hold of the accused at his house and thrashed him badly. He was later handed over to the police.
“The accused, identified as Markus Lakra, used to live in the same locality as that of the girl. He allegedly lured the girl on some pretext into his house and then raped her. It appears that the girl was strangled to death. A post-mortem is being conducted,” said Officer-in-charge Namkom police station, Rajendra Dubey.

Lakra has been admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences. “His condition is reported to be serious,” said Dubey.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar said that the accused used to work as a mason. “We are yet to establish whether he knew the girl personally,” he said, adding that the possibility could not be ruled out. The girl’s father worked as a helper in a private shop.
