On October 24, the Samajwadi Party, which has not yet fully recovered from its internal rebellion, had expelled Ram Gopal, one of its senior leaders and a strong supporter of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Ram Gopal’s expulsion was seen as retaliation for the sacking of Shivpal Yadav, Mulayam’s younger brother and Akhilesh’s rival, from the state cabinet. Shivpal, at a press conference, had accused Ram Gopal of trying to divide the party at the behest of the BJP.
