Students from across the city joined hands on Thursday to raise their voice against the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who went missing from campus on October 15.
The Mumbai wing of the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, a fraternity of students and other organisations, held a rally to show solidarity with Najeeb’s mother and sister. It has been almost 40 days since Najeeb disappeared from the JNU campus after an alleged tiff with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
A rally was held from Kurla to the Kalina campus of the University of Mumbai where slogans were raised against the ‘hooliganism’ of ABVP and the RSS on college campuses. Around 300 students and labour organisations, who participated in the rally, demanded that the search for Najeeb be expedited. Salman Ahmed, president, Mumbai division of the Students Islamic Organisation drew similarities in the thoughts of Najeeb and Rohith Vemula. He said Najeeb was allegedly targeted by ABVP for his ideology.
Speaking at the rally, Salman said that the present BJP-run government was allegedly a fascist one and allegedly could not tolerate a difference of opinion.
