With Navjot Singh Sidhu still keeping everyone guessing about his next move, his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and former Akali MLA Pargat Singh have decided to join the Congress on November 28. “Both Dr Sidhu and Pargat met me today and I welcome them into the party. They will join us formally on November 28,” Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh said on Wednesday. Congress sources said both leaders would be given party tickets for the elections next year.

With this, Sidhu’s Awaaz-e-Punjab, billed as the fourth front in the Assembly polls, has disintegrated. Two days ago, two members of AEP — Independent MLA brothers from Ludhiana Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains — joined AAP.

Amarinder, who had earlier called the Sidhus an “undisciplined couple” and their outfit a “Tonga party”, wasted no time in tweeting soon after meeting them: “I am pleased to announce that Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu & Pargat Singh will formally be joining Congress on November 28.”

Sidhu and Pargat too had, in a joint statement issued a few days ago, accusing Amarinder of having a “nexus” with the Badals and said they could join Congress only when Amarinder was not at the helm of affairs.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kaur Sidhu and Pargat Singh met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Delhi. Sources said Navjot Singh Sidhu skipped the meeting as he was in Mumbai for some professional engagement.
Congress sources said he too would join the party after the code of conduct kicked in, which would boost the party just ahead of elections since his entry could be a “prized catch” considering his popularity among the youths in Punjab.

Earlier, there were reports that Sidhu was being offered the Lok Sabha ticket from Amritsar or a senior minister’s berth in Punjab Cabinet if the Congress was voted to power.

In 2014, the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat was won by Captain Amarinder Singh, who formally resigned as MP on Wednesday in protest against the recent Supreme Court verdict on SYL. Sidhu’s wife had earlier quit as BJP MLA from Amritsar (East). Pargat represented Jalandhar (Cantt) in the Assembly.
