Provide enough notes in ATMs, Sarbananda Sonowal tells RBI regional chief

While a section of ATMs have reopened in Guwahati and a few major cities of the states on Saturday, most of the cash got exhausted by the afternoon even as customers stood in long serpentine queues.

With the people continuing to suffer due to non-functioning of majority of ATMs across the state for the third consecutive day, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday directed the RBI regional office here to take urgent steps in order to remove the hardship of the customers.

Sonowal, who called up RBI regional director BK Mishra on the phone, pointed out that the people were facing immense hardship due to non-availability of enough cash in the ATMs that had reopened after the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, as also because a large number of ATMs were yet to reopen.

While a section of ATMs have reopened in Guwahati and a few major cities of the states on Saturday, most of the cash got exhausted by the afternoon even as customers stood in long serpentine queues. A sizeable number of ATMs on the other hand remained shut for the fourth consecutive day after the government announced demonetising the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

The situation on the other hand continued to be worse in other Northeastern states, with enough quantity of currency notes were yet to reach capital cities like Agartala, Shillong, Imphal, Kohima, Aizawl and Itanagar. Banks also failed to provide customers with currency notes in exchange of old notes despite government advertisements saying that each customer can exchange up to Rs 4000 in lieu of old notes. Most bank branches in Guwahati displayed “No cash” notes much to the disgust of customers.
