Odisha ratifies GST Bill, next is President’s nod

With Odisha becoming the 16th state to ratify the Constitutional Amendment Bill on GST Thursday, the Central government will now seek Presidential assent for the Bill.

Odisha Assembly passed the Bill unanimously. With this, the minimum requirement of 50 per cent of states and UTs ratifying the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill has been completed. The President can now notify the GST Council, which will decide the tax rate and other related issues.

“The requisite number of states have ratified the GST Constitution Amendment Bill and now it can go for Presidential assent,” Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted. Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said the government is ahead of its schedule for GST implementation. “Instead of 30 days kept for this (states’ ratification), it is achieved in 23 days,” he tweeted.
