The Home Ministry has asked all states and union territories to ensure that Martyrs’ Day, observed on January 30, is celebrated with complete sincerity and greater public participation.

In a directive issued last week, the ministry asked states and union territories to instruct educational institutes and public sector enterprises to observe Martyrs’ Day with full solemnity and in a befitting manner.

“In the past, it has been observed that while two minutes’ silence is observed in some offices, the general public goes about its occupation in the ordinary course, unmindful of the solemnity of the occasion. The state governments and union territories are therefore requested to take necessary steps to ensure that Martyrs’ Day is observed with due solemnity and with better public participation,” said the Home Ministry communiqué.
