The Kranti Maratha Morcha (KMM) has cancelled its rally in New Delhi scheduled on November 20 citing financial crunch following the Centre’s demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

The KMM has convened a meeting of the core committee later this week to decide the fate of another rally scheduled in Nagpur on December 14. All the local level Maratha protests which were planned to keep the reservation issue alive have been put on the back-burner due to shortage of funds.

“The demonetisation has hit our plans to proceed with the rallies in talukas and cities in Maharashtra and outside,” a senior KMM functionary told The Indian Express, “When your pockets are empty, who will come for the rally? Even the rich Maratha leaders who are committed to reservation have expressed inability to mobilise funds for rallies in the state or outside”.

The Delhi rally was planned to coincide with the winter session of Parliament. “Our calculation is that we need at least Rs 8,000 per person. Raising the funds when old notes have become redundant is a challenge,” said an organiser.
