Former BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday formed a new political front in Punjab with India’s former hockey captain Pargat Singh and Punjab MLAs Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwant Singh Bains. He has named the party “Aawaaz-e-Punjab”. The “Aawaaz-e-Punjab” poster says the front will “raise voice against those who have destroyed Punjab”. According to PTI, the formal announcement will take place in 3-4 days.
The poster shows Sidhu in all black clothes flanked by former hockey captain Pargat Singh and Punjab MLA Simrat Singh Bains. The news of Sidhu forming a political front comes at a time when the party is facing the prospect of a vertical split after its state convenor Sucha Singh Chhotepur was sacked over allegations of bribery. The AAP, which has made it a triangular contest in Punjab by giving a tough fight to ruling Akali-BJP combine and Congress, was taken aback by the development as there were talks of Sidhu joining the party after deserting the BJP.
Ever since Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha on July 18, he has kept the political circle guessing about his next move. Speculation was rife that he would join AAP as the CM candidate for Punjab, but nothing materialised so far and the former cricketer and former Amritsar MP did not join even the AAP.
The Congress had been trying to get Sidhu on board ever since he resigned from Rajya Sabha membership. Congress leader Amarinder Singh had earlier said that Sidhu was welcome to join Congress as it is in his DNA, as his father happened to be a Congressman.
Sidhu hails from Patiala, the home town of Amarinder Singh.
