Sidhu, a former Lok Sabha MP, had quit the Rajya Sabha on July 18. Since then, speculation was rife that he would join AAP as the CM candidate for Punjab, but it did not materialise. He was also clearly miffed with the state of affairs in BJP when he claimed that he quit Rajya Sabha as the party had asked him to stay away from Punjab. After he put down his resignation, BJP sought to downplay the issue. BJP leader Prabhat Jha had said, “Had he been a politician, he would not have resigned. There is no need to worry. Party is bigger than any personality.”

Once his chapter with the BJP was closed, Sidhu looked to the Aam Aadmi Party. There was widespread speculation that he could be its face in the Assembly polls next year. Sidhu reportedly also wanted to be projected as the AAP’s chief minister candidate in Punjab. But it did not work out.

However, Arvind Kejriwal put all speculations to rest when he said he had met Sidhu, but needs time to decide and whether or not he joins the party must be respected. “Wud Navjot Sidhu ji join AAP- lot of rumours? Its my duty to put forward our side. We have greatest greatest regard for this ckt legend. He met me last week (sic),” he had tweeted.

In the meantime, Congress leader Amarinder Singh had said that Sidhu was welcome to join Congress as it is in his DNA, as his father happened to be a Congressman. But eventually, no decision was taken on his entry to the Congress fold either.

The entire episode was today put to rest when Sidhu decided to float the ‘Aawaaz-e-Punjab’ Party leaving the Aam Aadmi Party visibly shocked.

The news of Sidhu forming a political front comes at a time when AAP is facing the prospect of a vertical split after its state convenor Sucha Singh Chhotepur was sacked over allegations of bribery. “We have learnt that Sidhu has formed a political front. It is up to him to comment whether they will launch a party or not,” AAP’s Punjab state in-charge Sanjay Singh said.

Independent MLA from Ludhiana South Balwinder Bains, told PTI, “We have jointly formed a new platform Awaaz-e-Punjab”. While Sidhu is a former Amritsar Lok Sabha MP from BJP, Pargat Singh is an MLA from Jalandhar Cantt and was suspended by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in July along with another MLA from Amritsar (South) Inderbir Singh Bolaria for alleged anti-party activities.
