Ahead of the civic polls, the race between the Shiv Sena and its alliance partner BJP is likely to escalate for the inauguration of various civic projects.

According to Shiv Sena leaders, it plans to inaugurate four major civic projects, including the upgraded disaster management office, Powai lake beautification project, Gundwali-Bhandup water tunnel and the Vihar water treatment plant. “We plan to inaugurate these projects before the code of conduct comes for the civic polls. So, we have sought time from the chief minister for the same to proceed with it,” said Mayor Snehal Ambekar, who earlier this week wrote a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking his time.

Sena plans to inaugurate the projects in the presence of Fadnavis and Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. “We have informed him well in advance so that we can plan accordingly,” she added.

The Sena’s move comes at a time when the BJP leaders seem to be gearing up for a big event for the proposed coastal road inauguration and take credit for it. Fadnavis has been following up with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for clearance for the first phase of the project. It is likely to come soon, say officials.

A Sena corporator said if the chief minister does not give time for the inaugurations, then they would be constrained to conduct the events themselves. All these projects were promised in the Sena’s 2012 civic manifesto and we are fulfiling them, he added.

Recently, the bhoomipujan of the Colaba sewage treatment plant was carried out by Thackeray as Sena leaders claimed that Fadnavis was not allocating time for the programme and was cancelling his schedule at the last moment. Subsequently, the BJP leaders boycotted the programme stating that the Sena should have waited for the chief minister. The BJP had also boycotted the inauguration of the Dadar fire brigade building last month.

“Sena ideally should have waited for Fadnavis for the Colaba event. We are an alliance partner of the Sena in the BMC and should be considered for the programmes,” said a BJP leader.

In September, Fadnavis inaugurated a BMC-built swimming pool and gymnasium in Dahisar without Sena’s participation. Ambekar objected to it saying it is not the “BMC’s official event” and stated that “it is an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of ‘co-operative federalism’.”
