At least 10 people have died and nine others injured after a bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge in southern Mizoram late on Saturday night.

The bus, a privately-owned one that was plying from the southern town of Lawngtlai towards state capital Aizawl, fell into a gorge near Ramlaitui village at around 9 pm.

Villagers at Ramlaitui, the first responders to the tragedy, worked overnight and with the help of villagers from neighbouring Thenzawl and Haulawng, Police and State Disaster Response Force personnel, laid the dead in coffins and admitted the injured to a hospital at Thenzawl, about 95 km from Aizawl.

At least three among them, the more critically injured, have been referred to the state capital for better treatment.

A police officer present at the site said despite initial reports that the driver was drunk, the accident might have been caused by a speeding truck that came in the opposite direction, with the bus driver swerving to avoid a collision.
