A man was beaten to death by a group of people after he reportedly attacked his father and an elderly neighbour near Tirunelveli on Sunday. Guruswamy, 36, had been undergoing treatment for mental illness, police said.
The incident took place near Sankarankoil town police station, about 50 km from Tirunelveli town. After the alleged murder, the police arrived and took Guruswamy’s father Kadarkarai to hospital.
According to an officer at Sankarankoil police station, Guruswamy first attacked Krishnammal, a 70-year-old neighbour. “She was hit with a log. Kadarkarai tried to pacify his son, but he was also attacked. Soon after, a group of people surrounded Guruswamy and tied his hands and legs before beating him to death,” said the officer.
He said that at least three people attacked Guruswamy while a large crowd watched. “We have identified them. A police team is searching for them in the village,” he added.
Guruswamy, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community, was a plantation worker in Kerala, where his parents worked as coolies. “They returned to Tirunelveli only two years ago after his mental problems got worse,” a police officer said.
