

Former prime Minister Manmohan Singh turned 84 on Monday, with his family keeping him company. Sources said visitors were regulated as he has not been keeping well. His family paid him a visit for a get-together in the evening. The phone, however, kept ringing through the day. President Pranab Mukherjee, his predecessor Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi were among those who called to wish him.

Aware of the pitfalls of important words getting lost in translation, the BJP leadership worked overtime to ensure that someone who understood Hindi very well was tasked with the job of translating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech into Malayalam at the rally in Kozhikode. The man chosen for the job, former BJP state unit president V Muraleedharan, did not disappoint the party. The party was nervous because of its experience at last year’s Thrissur rally, where state unit general secretary K Surendran committed many faux pas while translating the PM’s speech.

The Centre has started clearing many pending transfers of high court judges finalised by the Supreme Court collegium. To begin with, the Law Ministry has notified the transfer back to Punjab and Haryana High Court of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Jaishree Thakur, both currently in Rajasthan High Court. Justice Songkhupchung Serto, Additional Judge of the Manipur High Court, has been shifted to Gauhati High Court.
