Maharashtra: Missing teen girls found dead in Hadapsar canal

The police have identified the deceased as Vaishnavi Santosh Birajdar (14) and Vidya Kumar Bhadre (14), both residents of Ansari Phata in Sadesataranali.

Two school girls who had gone missing from Sadesataranali area in Hadapsar on Tuesday were found dead in a local canal on Wednesday afternoon. Police suspect that the two drowned after falling into the canal while crossing the pipeline over it.

The police have identified the deceased as Vaishnavi Santosh Birajdar (14) and Vidya Kumar Bhadre (14), both residents of Ansari Phata in Sadesataranali. Both were studying in Class VIII at Madanlal Amolchand Darda, Dnyan Prabodhini Primary and Higher Secondary School in Sadesataranali.

The investigation has revealed that Vaishnavi and Vidya had gone to attend special lectures, conducted daily by the school between 9 am and 12 noon. Later, they left the school, saying they were going home to collect their tiffin boxes. But neither did they go home nor come back to school. Later in the evening, their parents went to the school to look for them, but could not find the girls.

Their parents then approached the Hadapsar police station, where a kidnapping case was registered. Local residents and a fire brigade team found Vidya’s body in a canal near Lakshmi colony at 1 pm. Two hours later, Vaishnavi’s body was found in the canal near Ansari Phata.

According to police, while local residents use a pipeline to cross the canal near Ansari Phata, the girls may have lost their balance and fallen inside the canal while trying to do the same.

Their bodies were handed over to their families after the post-mortem. Local residents have demanded that the canal should be fenced on both sides to prevent such incidents.
