FOR MOST BJP leaders, including senior ministers, who gathered at 30 Prithviraj Road on Wednesday to pay tribute to Kamla Advani, she was the source of affection and pillar of strength for L K Advani for decades.
Minutes after Kamla’s body was brought home from AIIMS, where she died after suffering cardiac arrest, senior ministers, BJP MPs and Delhi leaders started pouring in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at 9.15 pm and spent 20 minutes with Advani, his daughter Pratibha and son Jayant.
Senior cabinet ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, M Venkaiah Naidu, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ananth Kumar, Harsh Vardhan, Nirmala Sitharaman and Suresh Prabhu also rushed to Advani’s residence. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur also came to pay tribute. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh was the first leader from the opposition parties to visit Advani’s residence.
Kamla Advani, 83, complained of breathlessness in the evening and was taken to the AIIMS where doctors tried to revive her. A statement issued by the hospital said, “Kamla Advani, wife of L K Advani, was brought to the main casualty, AIIMS at 5.10 pm in a very serious unconscious and unresponsive condition. Immediate evaluation revealed the patient to be in cardiopulmonary arrest.” It said immediate resuscitation measures were provided by a team of doctors. “However, despite 60 minutes of intensive efforts she could not be revived and was declared dead at 6.10 pm,” it said.
