J&K: Hizb operative held for killing ex-militant, his 3-yr-old son

The killing of the three-year-old boy Burhan Bashir had evoked strong resentment in the Valley, even separatist organizations had condemned the killing.

FIVE months after the killing of a three-year-old boy and his father in north Kashmir’s Sopore area, police have arrested the mastermind allegedly responsible for the killings.

Sources said Towheed Bashir Mir, the accused affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen, was tracked through mobile surveillance. “He had two SIMs…while he had discarded one, he was using the other. After five months’ wait, police arrested him near Zaloora village,” said a senior police officer.


The killing of Burhan (3) had evoked resentment, with even separatist organisations condemning the killing. Soon after the incident police had constituted an SIT to track down the killers.

“Mir was the main accused who shot Bashir Ahmed Bhat, a surrendered militant, and his three-year-old son,’’ Sopore SP Abdul Qayoom said.

He said the SIT had completed the probe and submitted a chargesheet against Mir and Tahir Bashir Sheikh alias Tahir Malla. “While Malla was arrested shortly after the incident, Mir went missing,’’ he said. He added that once police received information that the militant was travelling from Srinagar to Handwara, a check-point was established. “He was apprehended when he tried to escape towards an orchard on spotting the check-point”.

On September 19, 2015, Burhan and his father were shot by unidentified persons outside their Sagipora home. Bhat was walking outside his house when two bike-borne gunmen fired at him. Burhan, who in Bhat’s lap, was also hit. While Bhat succumbed on the way to hospital, Burhan was operated upon but succumbed to injuries next day.
