Amid the political suspense, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti — who is likely to be sworn in as the next chief minister — on Sunday had her first meeting with party leaders after the demise of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
“She gave a brief speech. She said Mufti sahib has put a huge responsibility on her shoulders. ‘It is a responsibility on your shoulders,’ she told us… She then broke down. It was an emotional scene,” said a senior PDP leader, who was present in the meeting.
Another PDP leader and a minister in the Mufti Sayeed-led cabinet said party leaders assured Mehbooba of their support.
Party legislators and senior functionaries attended the informal meeting, sources said. They said two senior leaders and parliamentarians — Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tariq Hameed Karra — who have been party dissidents also attended it.
PDP sources said Mehbooba interacted with party leaders for nearly five minutes. “But it was important as it was her first contact with party leaders,” said a leader. Sources said the meeting was followed by dinner in which the late CM’s personal staff were also invited.
