SAGAR THAKKAR alias Shaggy, suspected to be one of the masterminds of the call centre con, could be holed up in Dubai, according to investigators.

The Thane police team that went to look for him at his Ahmedabad residence over the weekend found the 24-year-old and his family missing. The team found the Ahmedabad address to be a one-room-kitchen apartment where he lived till around four years ago before hitting the ‘big league’.

Based on their information, said an officer investigating the case, Thakkar would travel out of the country quite often.

“We have unverified information that he is currently in Dubai. Once we are certain he is there, we could approach the government to use diplomatic channels to get him back to the country. He will have to return to India soon,” said the officer.

The police team had over the weekend gone to the Vastrapur area of Ahmedabad looking for Thakkar.“When we reached the address that we had for him in the Vastrapur area of Ahmedabad, we found that he, along with his family, had moved out nearly four years ago. It was a low-income one-room-kitchen (house). Now he moves around in high-end cars with bodyguards protecting him round the clock. He had turned things around for him in a big way,” said the officer. The police are, however, still clueless about how the 24-year-old made so much money in such a little time.

“All we know is that he started a small call centre in Ahmedabad that went on to do pretty well. With this success, he gave contracts for other call centres in Mira Road, which were eventually busted,” said the officer. He added, “The missing link is the contact from US who gave him access to all the data of US citizens who were called by employees. There are several questions that will be clear only once we arrest Thakkar.”

The police are also questioning employees working at higher designations at the call centres who interacted with Thakkar when he came to the call centres to get more leads on him. Apart from Thakkar, the police are also on the lookout for one Tapesh Gupta, who is suspected to be an important link in the rogue call centres operating from Mira Road.
