Hours after senior BJP leader Brijpal Teotia was seriously injured when a group of armed men in an SUV opened fire at him and his associates in Ghaziabad’s Muradnagar, police recovered the suspected vehicle, a white Toyota car.

They also recovered weapons, including an AK-47 and ammunition, within a five kilometre radius of the incident site. Some persons have been detained in connection with the attack, said police.

The weapons were found inside a cricket kit in Ghaziabad’s Modi Nagar area late Thursday, said police. “An AK-47, two 9 mm pistols and a lot of cartridges were recovered from a cricket bag that was dumped in a field,” said a senior police officer.

Meanwhile, six police teams are conducting raids across several districts to nab the suspects. “Six teams — one each from Noida, Meerut, Bulandshahr — and one STF team, as well as two teams from Ghaziabad, have been constituted. They are conducting raids and search operations in these districts and Gurgaon,” added the officer.

Police have also found the car allegedly used by the assailants — a white Toyota Fortuner with an Uttarakhand registration number — about four kilometres away from the crime scene on Rawli Road in Muradnagar. The car will be examined by a team of forensic experts, said police.

“It is a 2009 model and the engine of the vehicle seems to be in a very bad state. It seems that the car had been procured for this job, so that it could be abandoned after the incident,” said a senior police officer.

Apart from Teotia, five of his associates were injured in the incident. They have been identified as Rampal Singh, Ashok Singh, Mohkam Singh, Indrapal Singh and Vipin Singh.

Senior officers of Uttar Pradesh Police, including Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljit Chowdhary, reached the incident site Friday morning, hours after Sujeet Pandey, Inspector General, Meerut Zone, visited the crime scene and held a meeting with local police officers.

Confirming that some persons have been detained, Chowdhary said, “Police got some clues from their statements, which will help us nab the criminals.”
