A day after a month-old baby of Nabarangpur succumbed to branding by a witchdoctor, another infant in steel city Rourkela died after his parents got him branded with hot bangles on the abdomen.

The victim, a one-month old baby of tribal couple Chian Barla and Samari Barla in Deogaon slums under Raghunathpalli police limits in Rourkela, died on Friday at Rurkela Government Hospital. The baby boy was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, two days after a quack branded him with a hot glass bangle to hide a vein on the abdomen.

Chief medical officer of the hospital, Barish Kumar Das said the baby died of septicaemia. “The baby was already underweight and suffered from anaemia. The branding worsened his condition which led to septicaemia,” said Dr Das.

Das said the infant’s parents had got him branded on March 8 by a local quack after seeing “Anasi sira”(a vein becoming prominent) on his abdomen. The couple had earlier got their first child branded a few years ago. But soon after the branding, the condition of the baby worsened.

After the infant died, his parents hurridly buried the body. A case has been lodged by local people at the Raghunathpalli police station. Police may exhume the body for investigation.

On Thursday, a month-old infant in Nabarangpur’s Nandahandi block had succumbed to the brandings on his abdomen by a quack. The baby died on the way to the hospital.
