Almost three months after he was kidnapped, an Indian engineer working with a Singapore-based shipping company has been freed by pirates in Nigeria.
“I am extremely happy to inform that Shri Santosh Bhardwaj has been rescued from pirates in Nigeria,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet along with a picture of Santosh’s wife Kanchan.
Bhardwaj, a marine engineer, was kidnapped near Nigeria on March 26. He was working with Transocean Limited and was kidnapped along with four colleagues from different countries— two from Ukraine and one each from Pakistan and Bangladesh—when their ship Sampatiki was at sea, nearly 30 nautical miles off the Nigerian capital Lagos.
