A teacher of the prestigious Cotton College in the Assam capital was hacked to death by her husband in the wee hours of Friday, following which the husband went and surrendered before the police. The victim has been identified as Benazir Sultana Khanam, who had only three months ago joined as a faculty in the Education department in the 115-year old college.

Police said the woman was murdered by her husband, Imdadul Hussain, with a dao (machete) around 4 AM. “While the man surrendered at the Nagaon police station early Friday morning claiming he had killed his wife, police found the woman lying in a pool of blood in their house at Chowkitop, a locality in Nagaon town,” Nagaon SP Arabinda Kalita said. He also said that the man claimed the couple had some marital problem.

The woman, who hailed from Nagaon, about 120 kms from Guwahati, had only in October 2015 joined Cotton College, as a lecturer in the Education department. “She had done her BA from our college and on completion of her MA, had only on October 6 last year joined as a faculty,” said Cotton College principal Nirada Devi. The couple had married about four years ago.
