Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani refrained from naming his successor on Monday, but said both Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and the Hurriyat faction he heads know who will be the next chairman.
Geelani has not been keeping well and there were reports that he would name his successor.
However, at a press conference Monday, Geelani refrained from doing so. When asked about his successor, he said: “Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is well aware what to do when I am no more. As far as Hurriyat Conference is concerned, they too will know who will be chairman. They will take a decision after consultation.’’

Sources close to Tehreek-e-Hurriyat have hinted that Geelani’s confidant Mohammad Ashraf Sehri could be named his successor. Sehri, who is in his late 70s, is known as a grassroots worker and a top Jamaat-e-Islami leader.
Separatist leader Masarat Alam, who is currently under detention, is another strong contender for the post. Sources said some leaders within Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Hurriyat (G) feel Alam would be an able successor of Geelani. After separatist leader Shabir Shah parted ways with Hurriyat (M) and joined the Geelani faction, many analysts were of the opinion that he too could be considered.
