DAYS BEFORE Hungary observes 60 years of its 1956 uprising, Prime Minister Viktor Orban underlined India’s thriving democracy and the role the country, Nehru and its then charge d’affairs in Hungary, M A Rahman, played in the event. Orban was addressing the media along with Indian Vice-President Hamid Ansari at the century-old Parliament building Sunday after the signing of two MoUs between the two countries.

“An important notion in Indian political thought that is of great value to Hungary is the idea of peaceful development. As the world undergoes a major transformation, it’s the time of significant opportunity and also threat. We have promised to support India in its international aspiration. We have agreed to set up a working group on technology,’’ said Orban.

Ansari reiterated India’s appreciation for the support extended by Hungary to India’s membership of the Missile Technology Control Regime and for entry into the NSG. “There has been a meeting of minds between our two sides that the scourge of terrorism needs to be eliminated and the need for a strong global legal framework and concerted action by all in dealing with this threat,” he said.

The two countries signed an MoU on water management and another between the Indian Council for World Affairs and Hungary’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
