Nearly two hours after BJP leader Brijpal Teotia was attacked on Rawli Road in Ghaziabad’s Muradnagar area, two gunmen, allegedly involved in the attack, opened fire at police in Modia Nagar, five kilometres from the crime scene.

According to police, the incident took place at a picket near Shadab Nagar checkpost in Modi Nagar, which had been set up to nab the assailants who had attacked the BJP leader.

“About 50-60 metres away from the checkpoint in Modi Nagar, two men jumped out of a moving autorickshaw and started running along the main road. As policemen gave chase, they also opened fire. Two rounds were fired by them. They were carrying a cricket bag which they dumped in a nearby field and ran away,” said a senior police officer.

Inside the bag, police found several weapons which, they suspect, were used in the attack on Teotia. “An AK-47, two 9 mm pistols and cartridges were recovered from the bag. They must have been carrying at least two more weapons with them,” said the officer.

Police are now trying to reconstruct the assailants’ escape route. “Preliminary investigation shows that after the incident, the assailants crossed Muradnagar canal and took the road towards Baghpat. They seemed to have dropped off the two men who were carrying that bag. A kilometre after that, the car got stuck, so they dumped it and escaped. The two men who were dropped off took an auto-rickshaw and then saw the picket in Modi Nagar… we are still trying to ascertain all the facts,” said the officer.
