The students were identified as Hitendra Sharma from Theog, Chetan Chori and Saurav Sharma from Ambala, Ankush Kumar from Gurdaspur, Rohit Kumar from Bhagpat district in Uttar Pradesh, Anil Kumar from Hamirpur, Akshay Kumar Bura from Chamba and Bharat Prakash from Kullu district.

On reaching Kullu, rescued student Anil Kumar informed that they had almost lost hopes to survive as heavy snowfall and dense fog had engulfed the whole area and there was no chance of their return.

“Our mobile phone batteries had also discharged and it was just a half a minute call, which he could make to police helpline to inform they been stranded at Chanderkhani and taken shelter under a cave. When we saw helicopter hovering over us, it gave a ray of hope that we will not died, or get perished under snow and freezing temperature,” he told.

Till the rescue teams reached them on Sunday, the trekkers had exhausted their supply of food and water. Two persons who could not be airlifted due to bad weather were provided life support at the site and they were evacuated safely on Monday morning, said ADG (Law and Order) Sanjay Kundu.

Five teams comprising of 50 ITBP personnel were deployed for the rescue operation beside a private company, engaged in Heli-skiing activity at Kullu, pressed into service .

The teams were launched from three directions of Patnikhal to Chandrakani, Bijli Mahadev to Chandrakani and Malana village to Chandrakani, a spokesperson for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police said earlier, but it was inclement weather that hampered search and rescue efforts.
