Gujarat: Poll panel opens EVM after protest

Sources in the Rajkot collectorate said that Jadeja challenged the result saying that he had polled more votes as an Independent in the previous election

The SEC decided to open an EVM to prove to a Congress candidate who had challenged his defeat. Congress candidate Harishchandrasinh Jadeja of Ravki village in Lodhika taluka panchayat of Rajkot district refused to believe that he got just 52 votes, with the seat having gone to the BJP.

Ravki is one of the 16 seats of Lodhika taluka panchayat. Sources in the Rajkot collectorate said that Jadeja challenged the result saying that he had polled more votes as an Independent in the previous election. “We called an engineer from the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited, opened the EVM in Jadeja’s presence and got a printout of the votes polled and showed it to him. Only then he conceded defeat,” a poll official said.
