THE Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolhapur police approached the Yerawada jail authorities in Pune Thursday seeking the custody of Sanatan Sanstha member Virendra Tawde to probe his role in the murder of veteran communist leader Govind Pansare. Tawde has been in judicial custody since June for his alleged involvement in the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar.

Pansare and his wife were shot at near their house in Kolhapur on February 16, 2015. Pansare (81) succumbed to his injuries four days later.

A Pune court had on June 20 allowed the SIT to take custody of Tawade, an ENT surgeon. The investigation will look into an alleged connection in the two murders. Pansare was shot dead near his residence by motorcycle-borne assailants on February 16, 2015. He succumbed to his injuries four days later. Dabholkar was killed in a similar way in Pune in 2013 by unknown assailants.

Kolhapur SP Pradeep Deshpande said, “On Thursday, we approached the jail authorities. But as the transfer remand order by the magistrate court in Pune was from June, the jail officials have asked us to get a fresh court order. Our officer will make a fresh application to the court on Friday.”
