

Martyred Major Amit Deswal’s father broke down at a wreath laying ceremony held in Imphal to pay homage to the young soldier. In a video posted online by news agency ANI, Deswal’s father, Rishi Ram, could be seen walking with a wreath escorted by uniformed soldiers at the ceremony. Later, he is seen hugging his son’s colleague and breaking down.
Major Amit Deswal was killed during a combing operation conducted by the Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Forces in Tamenglong district of Manipur. The soldiers had engaged in gunbattle with Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militants in the Nungba area.
Deswal, of 21 Para SF, received a gunshot wound to his stomach during the operation. Unfortunately, his body could not be recovered immediately as the area was densely forested.
Manipur CM Ibobi Singh also extended his condolences to the bereaved father.

Major Deswal was commissioned into the Regiment Of Artillery on June 10, 2006 and had been selected for the coveted Special Forces. He had been sent to Manipur this January. He had been inspired to join the Army by his father who was a Subedar Major.
Major Deswal is survived by his wife and young son.
