TARGETING PRIME Minister Narendra Modi during the demonetisation debate in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury drew parallels with King Louis XV and Marie Antoinette, wife of Louis XVI.

“Louis XVth said, ‘after me the deluge’. The Prime Minister added a prefix to it — before me the void, after me the deluge,” said Yechury, countering the government’s argument on demonetisation. “We have Modi Antoinette who says, ‘if you don’t have paper, use plastic’,” said Yechury, referring to Queen Marie Antoinette’s infamous quote that people can eat cakes if they don’t have bread.

He also compared Modi to a Roman ruler, about whom a senator said: “I think he knows what Rome is. Rome is the mob. Conjure magic for them and they’ll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they’ll roar… He’ll bring them death — and they will love him for it.”

Saying that demonetisation will not check black money, he said: “It’s like the PM is cleaning a pond to kill the crocodiles, forgetting that crocodiles can survive even on land. Big crocodiles have survived. Small fish have died.”

“And then comes this Paytm advertisement with PM appearing on it telling people to move to a cashless society. It is no longer ‘Jai Hind’. Now, the PM is appearing in advertisement saying ‘Jio Hind’,” said Yechury.

He also called for a joint parliamentary committee to look into the issue.
