Slamming the demonetisation move by the Modi government, the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday recalled the BJP’s opposition to a similar move of the UPA government in January 2014.

The party pulled out news reports and a video showing BJP spokesperson (now MP) Meenakshi Lekhi saying that the “illiterate and (those who) have no access to banking facilities will be the ones hit by such diversionary measures”.

Responding to BJP president Amit Shah’s dig at AAP and other parties for opposing the demonetisation move, Delhi AAP convenor Dilip Pandey said, “Amit Shah will do well to once again see his party’s stand of January 2014 about the same decision.”

“In January 2014, there were reports of the UPA government trying to implement this but they had to ultimately shelve it and news reports were denied by the then RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. Then Meenakshi Lekhi had said, ‘the aam aurat and aadmi (common people) — those who are illiterate and have no access to banking facilities —will be the ones hit by such diversionary measures’”.
