It has been a hectic month for Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani. Apart from making frequent trips to Bihar to address election rallies, Irani travelled extensively across the country to participate in discussions meant for drafting of the new National Education Policy (NEP). With the poll season and NEP consultations drawing to a close soon, the minister has now decided to host a dinner at her residence to thank all ministry officials for their efforts. The dinner, interestingly, is just a day ahead of Bihar poll results.

Plan Change

Among those whose schedule was disrupted on Thursday due to the India-Africa summit in Delhi were Chhattisgarh Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel and leader of Opposition T S Sinhadev. They were scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi in the afternoon before taking an evening flight to Raipur. Sonia, however, was busy meeting African leaders until late in the evening, forcing the Chhattisgarh leaders to reschedule their flight to Friday morning.

The allotment of 10, Rajaji Marg bungalow to Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma invited some flak for the government not just because it happened to be the residence of former President A P J Abdul Kalam. The argument being made is that as Minister of State, Sharma is not entitled to a Type-VIII bunglow. Quick to defend their action, officials in the Urban Development Ministry opened the rulebook to show that no rules had been broken. They also cited previous instances of Ministers of States being allocated Type-VIII bunglows during the UPA rule. The list includes names like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot, K H Muniyappa, Chiranjeevi, E Ahamed and Rajeev Shukla.

Emotional Moment

Campaigning in Bihar, Rahul Gandhi made former Speaker Meira Kumar emotional with one act of his. Kumar was travelling with Rahul in the same helicopter and had kept a bottle of water with her. She drank from it. When Rahul picked that bottle to have some water, she stopped him saying it was “jutha”. Rahul ignored her advice and drank water from the same bottle. Kumar’s eyes apparently turned moist.
