A 27-year-old man and a minor girl, who had eloped recently from a Godda village, allegedly committed suicide inside Argoda police station in Ranchi early Tuesday morning. Three policemen, including incharge of the police lock-up, have been suspended and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered in connection with the case.
According to the police, Mohammad Gaffar Alam, a resident of Bhanjpur village in Mahagam area of Godda, had eloped with the girl, identified as Pooja Kumari, a resident of the same village on January 15.
“A case of kidnapping was registered against Alam by the girl’s mother, who mentioned that her daughter was a minor. Initial investigations revealed that they have fled to Ranchi,” said Inspector (Mahagam), Mohammad Qasim.
The girl’s mother had also filed an application to meet the Chief Minister in this regard during his “Jan Samvad” programme. Godda Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar said: “The woman had not yet met the Chief Minister, but her application was received, following which the investigations were intensified.”

On Monday night, Godda and Argoda police reached the rented accommodation of Alam, who had taken up a job of security guard, in Tungri Tola and recovered the duo.
“As per norms, the couple was brought to the police station. The girl was kept in a room along with a female constable, while the man was put in the police lock-up, as he was an accused in an FIR. There was some lapse, which led to the incident,” said a Godda police officer associated with the entire episode.
The bodies of the two were handed over to their families, who performed the last rites.
Two Assistant Sub-Inspectors – Kanak Lata and Sushil Singh – as well as constable Indra Bhushan Mishra, who was incharge of the Argoda lock-up, were suspended by Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Dwivedi.
“Preliminary investigations have indicated that it was the girl, who handed the poisonous substance to Alam. Further probe regarding lapses are on. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered,” he said.
