Weeks after India conducted the “surgical strikes”, Sri Lanka and Bhutan have strongly backed India’s firm stand against cross-border terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Sri Lankan President and Bhutan Prime Minister on the sidelines of the 8th BRICS summit in Goa.

Briefing the media after Modi’s meeting with the two leaders, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said that the Prime Minister thanked them for the solidarity shown by Sri Lanka and Bhutan after the Uri terror attack. Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena asserted that the country shares the grief of India over the Uri attack and his country stands firmly against terror in all its manifestations. “Terror is the direct threat to economic prosperity. We all want peace in the region and terrorism poses a direct challenge to this objective,” Sirisena told Modi.

Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay said cross-border terrorism is the worst form of terror. “We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in the region,” he said. He also expressed his concern over the Uri attack and said Bhutan stands “shoulder to shoulder” with India. India has recently pushed the issue of cross-border terror at various international platforms in a bid to isolate Pakistan. All the countries in the region have shown support to India’s cause.
