The JD(U) Sunday accused the BJP of raking up the triple talaq issue “just to communalise” UP Assembly polls, adding that it could also attempt a “shila poojan” even though the Ayodhya temple and Babri Masjid dispute was before the Supreme Court.
On the opening day of its two-day national council meet in Rajgir, the JD(U) formally endorsed the selection of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as party national president. Describing Nitish as “mahanayak (super hero)” of 2015 Bihar Assembly polls, the party authorised him to explore ways to “replicate the Bihar Grand Alliance model at the national level”. It also authorised Nitish Kumar to bring about necessary amendments in the party constitution to help expand JD(U)’s base beyond Bihar.
Speaking to the media after the first day’s session, JD (U) national spokesperson KC Tyagi said: “We have endorsed selection of Nitish Kumar to the party national president’s post. We discussed several issues confronting the country. We want to ask why the BJP has been discussing triple talaq. There are ways to discuss it internally among the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), clerics and cultural and social bodies. Why is the BJP discussing it now? They just want to communalise UP elections.”
“The atmosphere in UP is communally charged. There have been talks of shila pujan even when the Ayodhya matter has been before Supreme Court. Why have there been no talks on unemployment in states like Bihar and Chhattisgarh?” he said.
