BJP leaders knew of demonetisation, stashed money in accounts, says CPM

“The way PM Modi stepped in to announce the move without the finance minister or the RBI governor flanking him made us believe it had been a top secret," said CPM MLA.

CPM MLA and leader of the Left Front Legislation Party Sujan Chakraborty on Friday alleged that BJP leaders were aware of the demonetisation strategy, a charge which the BJP denied. “The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped in to announce the move without the finance minister or the RBI governor flanking him made us believe it had been a top secret…What came as a shocker was the deposit of a huge amount of cash into the BJP’s bank accounts. In Kolkata, about Rs 3 crore was deposited within a week in two different party accounts,” Chakraborty said at a press conference on Friday.

He said if the news was broken to BJP leaders, then people in general could have been told as well.

“Common people had gone through a horrid time trying to deposit money in their accounts and getting valid tenders in return. More than the so-called purpose of blocking black money, it had ended up being an inconvenience,” he said.

Chakraborty also alleged that it was a BJP ploy to divert attention from the failures of the Centre.

“The present government had promised to bring back off-shore black money and deposit Rs 15 lakh in every citizen’s account. Along with that, there are other unfulfilled promises from which the PM intends to shift focus,” Chakraborty said.

CPM state secretary Surjyakanta Mishra too leveled the same allegations at the BJP.

“Does the party deposit such amounts every week? It shows that they had full knowledge of the ‘surgical strike’ on Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes,” Mishra said. The BJP on the other hand negated all allegations at a press conference conducted by party state vice-president Jayprakash Majumder and party state treasurer Sawarmal Dhananiya on Friday.

“Political parties don’t come under the purview of income tax. Under the given circumstances, there is no problem in political parties depositing money into their accounts. By depositing money to the party account on November 8, there has been benefit to the party,” Dhananiya said.

Majumder said the party had deposited the money into the bank transparently.

“We have not stashed away the money anywhere, and instead, deposited the money into the bank in an honest and transparent manner, which could have been done after the demonetisation announcement as well,” Majumder said.
