CPM MLA and leader of the Left Front Legislation Party Sujan Chakraborty on Friday alleged that BJP leaders were aware of the demonetisation plan, a charge which the BJP denied.
“The way the PM stepped in to announce the move without the Finance Minister or the RBI Governor flanking him made us believe it had been a top secret… What came as a shocker was the deposit of huge amounts of cash into the BJP’s bank accounts. In Kolkata, about Rs 3 crore was deposited within a week in two party accounts,” Chakraborty said at a press conference on Friday. He said if the news was broken to BJP leaders, then people in general could have been told as well.
“People have gone through a horrid time trying to deposit money in their accounts. More than the so-called purpose of blocking black money, it has become an inconvenience,” he said.
Chakraborty also alleged it was a BJP ploy to divert attention from failures of the Centre. “The current government had promised to bring back off-shore black money and deposit Rs 15 lakh in every citizen’s account. The PM intends to shift focus from these promises,” Chakraborty said.
The BJP denied all the allegations at a press conference on Friday. “Political parties don’t come under the purview of income tax. Under the given circumstances, there is no problem in political parties depositing money into their accounts,” said party state treasurer Sawarmal Dhananiya.
State party vice-president Jayprakash Majumder said that the party had deposited the money into the bank transparently.
