According to Talegaon Dabhade police station, the incident took place around 11.30 am on Sunday when Shelke was on his way to work in his car. A police official said that a group of 12 to 13 people stopped his car in front of Khandge petrol pump in Talegaon. Armed with knives, the assailants forced him to step out of the car, police said, adding, “the moment he did so, the men stabbed him several times and also shot at him. They fled from the spot, as Shelke fell to the ground bleeding.” He was immediately rushed to Pavana Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Vasant Babar, inspector in-charge of Talegaon Dabhade police station said, “We have formed teams for investigation. As per our primary information, they were 12 to 13 men who attacked him. At this stage, we won’t be able to ascertain whether he received bullet injuries but has several stab wounds. We have not yet ascertained the motive behind the attack.” A post-mortem was performed on Shelke at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune.
Shelke had been a councilor, deputy president and president in the TDMC in the past. He is survived by parents, wife and three children. The situation in Talegaon has been tense after the reports of his murder spread in the town on Sunday morning. Police has deployed personnel in the area to control the situation. Markets and several local shops were kept closed in protest against the incident.
On late Sunday evening, Talegaon police registered an offence against Dabhade and 10 others. It may be recalled that Dabhade was one of the five persons charged by the Pune rural police for the 2010 murder of RTI activist Satish Shetty. However, the five were cleared of charges after the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the case from Pune rural police. Police suspect the incident to be a fallout of a dispute in 2013.
